Default Wax or sealer?

I don't get around to waxing my truck that often, but i'd like to get to it soon. Generally speaking, do waxes last longer than sealers, or is it the other way around? If it's sealers, which one do you recommend?

to add to this post. You need to wash it really well. Then clay bar it. And wax of your choice ( optional ) then collinite over the wax. ( if you applied wax ) and the 2nd picture shows the beading.. After a few weeks of no rain or anything. The truck was covered in pollen. After you wash it ( say you wash it by hand ) take the hose attachment off and run water on the top of the hood. It should sheet off starting from the top and continue to run off until it is mostly dry. So it practically dries itself

I prefer good old fashioned Turtle Paste wax on all my vehicles. Thats what lasts the longest for me.

Sealants last longer than waxes, though the colinite appears to hold up quite well also.

I have used Klasse sealant on a black Solstice for the last 3 years and it lasts a full year or longer with no maintenance. Many report similar results with the colinite 845.

thanks. do they both offer similar UV protection? I've noticed some fading on my roof that i hope to polish out.

They both offer UV protection. If you want better, seal first, then wax over it, remembering that the wax will need to be replaced every 6-8 weeks.

Sealants last longer than wax
Coatings last longer than sealants.

Three basic Last Step Products (LSP)

Carnauba wax 2-6 week durability
It's a wax of the leaves of the palm Copernicia prunifera (Synonym: Copernicia cerifera), a plant native to and grown only in northeastern Brazil.
I will admit as a detailer, my idea and my wife's idea of a good Brazilian wax are completely different. <-(This line added for comedic distraction)

Sealants 3-6 month durability
Paint Sealants were created as an alternative to natural Carnauba waxes. Longevity lasts anywhere from 3-6 months depending on the conditions.
The newer sealants achieve the depth and shimmer of a carnauba wax, while maintaining the characteristic high-gloss shine of a polymer sealant.

Coatings 1-2+ years durability
Ultra hard CQuartz contains ceramic nano particles that creates an extremely durable hard glass coat which can protect & offers a deep, rich gloss.
This makes maintenance much quicker & easier. As a rule, a proper wash & a spray of Reload is all that is needed to maintain a quality LSP finish.

I'm not quite sure if this is a good way to explain it...I think of waxes & sealants as chocolate bars & Cquartz coating as a M&M's hard candy shell.
So if you're a Mr. Myiagi...Wax-on/Wax-Off...and you like the weekly personal contact with your trucks paint, Carnauba wax is the choice for you!

As some folks have said Coli 845 is a good winter wax, it is very shiny and looks good on light paint. It would not be my first choice on dark colors.
Sealants are usually polymers. Some of my favorites are Zaino Z-2 for light (it's good on dark too) & Blackfire Wet Diamond AFFP for darker paints.
This is all about the "look" on your paint. For black/dark you want warmth, depth & that look of a wet pool of calm water. For white you want bright!

Looks Versus Durability
This is the question you should ask yourself. There are hundreds of awesome Carnauba waxes, tons of Paint Sealants and even hybrids like Coli 845.
Coatings used to have a bright "Saran-Wrap" finish. They've gotten MUCH better in the last few years. For a set-it-and-forget-it finish use a coating.

Again as a few folks have said, decontaminate the paint before applying a Last Step Product (LSP). This is done with a clay bar & a Iron-X treatment.

Excellent post.

I prefer Wolfgang deep gloss available at autogeek. Remember though, your results completely rely depend on your prep work.

Wash, clay, Polish, and then wipe down using IPA so everything can bond properly.

On my last vehicle, I went with a coating. I only had the car 8 months before getting my truck but in that 8 months, I didn't have to recoat at all. I live in Houaton so it's very hot and humid. Even a sealant looses its durability after 2 months down here, a carnauba wax is a couple of weeks at best.

I haven't tackled my truck yet, but I'll be using an all in one Wolfgang polish and sealant combination.

Wolfgang sealant is very good product, only issue is the 12 hour cure time. Cannot be exposed to moisture until cured.
