No problem Nathan, it's not your fault. Their like a virus and try anyway they can. This is something new that I'm seeing, thinking the same with others. Most other sites I'm a member of has a period and post count before pm's are allowed. This has it's pros and cons like anything and I can see it being a pain for newbies. But they can always create a post in the Off Topic section and call out somebody, or become a regular and contribute to the forum and it won't take long for them to be eligible to pm.

Yeah today I got that very same PM on another forum I belong to. I just ignore them like my spam email I get hourly! I even get the occasional spam text on my phone.
Spam is everywhere these days and probably impossible to get rid of barring a law banning it.
