Default what to buy

Shelled the engine in my 05 150 today, too many miles to replace it considering buying something between a '12 and '13 150, any ideas out there, which is the better motor to look for, small block or v-6 eco boost? all help would be appreciated.

13 5.0 is safest bet.

I see your a retired master tech but what is the basis of your decision here? more reliable, better fuel economy exactly what. Is the 5.0 a better engine than the 5.4 was?

The 5.4 is a boat anchor compared to the modern 5.0 the 5.4 has less power, less fuel economy, less torque, 2011 and some 2012 5.0's had issues with cylinders being egg shaped, lower end knocks etc,.... 2013 is the 1st year of problem free 5.0 engines for the most part. Not saying they don't have issues as some have been reported but the reports are few and far between.

Lots and lots of ecoboost owners in these year ranges have experienced issues as well, that list is numerous just do a google search with your question for more input.

I have a 13 with 5.0, love it, gets about 19 on highway doing 65, and around 13 around town on the flatts.

Personally I like the 6.2 but they are hard to find and generally a couple mpg worse.

If possible I'd look strictly for a 13' and newer for the reasons Rnlcomp mentioned. Both the 5.0 and 3.5EB were ironed out better by then. The 5.0 might be ever so slightly more reliable, but IMO it's more of a crapshoot either way and I didn't let engine choice be a deciding factor when I was looking for a used truck.

Do you currently tow or haul anything regularly?

When I looked for my used F150 between 2011-2013s, I noticed there was about 7ish Ecos for sale to every 5.0.
