Weather Stripping removal

Weather Stripping removal
I have a 97 extended cab. I am replacing the 3rd door with one from the salvage yard and would like to remove the weather stripping so that I can paint the door. It appears that the rubber is held in place with plastic tabs that will break off if I try to remove them. From inside the door, I can squeeze the tabs to release a few of them but several are in inaccessible areas.
The only choices I can see are to break off the tabs and buy a replacement weather strip or to mask around it. Masking is difficult as my truck is Royal Blue (paint code KM) and the door is red. The Stealer (Whiteoak Ford) wants $135 for the weather strip. LMC trucks list one for $15.00 (49-7033)?? The plastic clips are not available separately.
Any ideas?
