V6 or V8 in an F150
#21
Lets face it guys: You put the same mods on a v8 that are on a v6, the v8 will wipe the floor with the smaller engine. You can't beat displacement and number of cylinders when it comes to power potential. The only reason the v6s have any guts at all is because they have blowers on them.
A twin turbo v8 vs the Ecoboost? Eco Boost doesn't stand a chance. Sure the ecoboost is better from the factory/stock but the 5.0 will ALWAYS have the higher potential for added power.
Can you imagine how awesome it would be if the ecoboost was a twin turbo v8?

His question was answered as best as possible on the first page:
I have had both! The V6 in my 2011 ext. cab F150 is very adequate. If I'm careful with the right foot, I can muster around 20 mpg combined driving. I get a little better on the open road. I tow a small trailer to the local scrap yard about every 2 weeks and sometimes it carries around 6000 #'s. It does this with ease and I love it. I would go with the V6, you won't be disappointed.
At least it hasn't turned into an EB vs 5.0 debate.

Just some words for the performance minded. You never know if he'll get the urge to mod his engine down the road when the truck isn't brand new. The V8 would give him more wiggle room.

I like Both of them. The Turbo will get better mileage. The 5.3 wll easily out-tourque the six and probably last longer. Just depends on which u prefer.

However, in this present era of factory warrantied delivery, there's nothing that can touch the EcoBoost. Performance VS Investment, it's simply unmatched. So the rest is pipe dreams and aftermarket expenses, and turbo additions are ~$10,000 with the parts, piping, welding, tuning, etc. We shoulda , coulda , bench racing tall tales of hopes without the funds to deliver reality kinda things.
I've got two LSx powered GM classic's I've been pricing out doing twin turbo's on.....it's not cheap at all. Which is why I JUMPED at the chance to own a factory TT truck with a warranty. I just waited 2 years for them to get the kinks out.
Everyone of the current F150 engine offerings are great options.
Only one I think is a wasted effort is the 6.2L.
The 3.7L is definitely a great motor for a college student though.

FYI , it is a truck! It isn't a woman, it'll do what I tell it to do!
Also just get a v8 they sound better! and I don't think the mpg difference is that substantial that itd be worth downsizing to the v6 unless you are an absolute tight *** when it comes to money. But the few bucks you save on gas you'll surely pay for when it comes time to sell it.

Whoops! I forgot I started the thread, sorry.
Anyways, thanks for the advice everyone, it sounds like a V6 is the right engine for me, depending on the features I need. Realistically, all I need is 4 wheels, a good engine, 2 seats, and a ton of cargo room.
I'm also looking at crossovers, but pickups would still be my first choice.
My pickup, being 24 years old, must only have around 150 hp, so I guess almost anything I get would be better than what I have. Cost is a big hindrance in college, but I still put quality above cost. In other words, I'd rather have a bigger loan on a better vehicle than a smaller loan on a crappy vehicle. Best case scenario, I get a slightly used truck after saving money and making a 30-50% down payment. 3 years is enough of a buffer for me to save money. Plus, the new trucks today will be the years I look at buying in the future.
Again, thanks for the advice everyone, I now have 3 pages of good information and opinions.
Have a happy Thanksgiving!
