The MAF could get junk on it from anything, (dirty mechanic hands while changing the airfilter and it gets sucked through the MAF) another example, my uncle had this issue with his K&N CAI with the oil filter, is the oil from that filter being sucked through and clogging it up. Considering the truck is new chances are it may not be the MAF but that would effect your mix and as a result ruin the mpg. The gaps are the same thing, if its firing to late the engine would be fighting itself, but again 2014 so unless they were installed like that also chances are low. (just suggestions if all other options were exploited) Again engage the dealler and see what kind of crazy they tell you, they may know something we dont.
Mike Lloyd is also correct and i have noticed it too, my mpg has gone down with the temp drop.

Mike

Default Bad Mileage Woes

Then loads of driving to further south Texas for deer hunting season. Basically what I am saying is I've been trying to make rhyme or reason of this since November so it's not like I only started a day or two ago...

The only mods to my 2014 FX4 Crew 5.0 is a leveling kit and one size larger tires (went from 255->265). Granted the tires are 10 ply Toyos, but I'm having a helluva time assuming that the additional weight from those alone is causing that much havoc on gas mileage...

I've not gotten a tuner yet as I have no idea which one to get - no research done yet by me.

Ideas? Thoughts?
I'm really pretty surprised your mileage is that far down the scale. I know Ford modified some of the programming for the 150s between 2011 and 2014, but 12 mpg? Jeez!

You may have seen a couple of my other posts regarding configurations for my truck, but just in case: Mine is an 11 FX4 SCREW with 5.0 and 3.73 diffs. I do have a cab-high canopy (Ranch, FWIW). Tires were the factory Scorpions. My average I/A mileage is about 18-18.5mpg and highway, if I stay at the speed limit, actually holds now at about 21mpg.
I run factory oil (synth blend) unless I plan for a cross-country trip, in which case I go full synthetic. Trans and diffs are Royal Purple; pricey, but so much more reliable, Your Toyos, with 10-plys, are less of an issue than the tread pattern. I'd be willing to bet they are part of the issue, having an effect on rolling resistance. My next set of tires will be Michelin LTXs, either MS2 or AT2. On my last truck, though they were a bit louder, I actually got better mileage with the ATs. Those were the original design, not the current tread pattern. I run all my tires at 5psi over the sticker pressure. I see mileage improvements, with no degradation in handling or wear. I'm not a hpyer-miler, either.

As to fuel, if you can find it in your area, definitely try to find gas with NO ethanol. The performance and mileage improvement, in my humble opinion, is well worth the increase in cost. The lack of ethanol definitely makes for a happier engine. Just about everyone, as you've seen, hates that E-85 crap. Mileage definitely decreases with E-85. Speaking of which, since you're in the Lone Star region, be careful even with the brand name stations. I noticed on a recent trip a decrease in the octane ratings of all grades of gas. Where it used to be 87, 89, and 93, based on grade, in TX I was seeing regularly 86, 88, and 90. The decrease in octane could also have been affecting your engine. I use either 87 or 89 octane for maximum efficency of the fuel itself. 93 is overkill, unless the engine has been significantly tweaked.

Unfortunately, and Ford won't admit it, reprogramming the computers after 2011 was more for emissions, than for fuel economy. Now, they're getting ready to push their new EB 2.7 on the 2015s. Sounds good in theory, but what good does it do to have a tubocharged engine that produces all the so-called extra horsepower, if it has to be in the turbo mode most of the time, because a smaller engine just has to work harder to pull the same weight and therefore, spends more time sucking up extra fuel in turbocharged mode.

I'm more than happy with my 5.0, which runs smoother and gets better mileage than my co-worker's 2012 EB, with 3.31. Both trucks are 4WD, by the way.

Hope this is of use. Keep us up on how it goes, and if I can be of any help, please let me know.

my 2012 5.0 .373 scab always gets about 16mpg, 60/40 city highway. i usually take off gently but cruise at very high speeds once i get going.

Default Disappointed

Hello,

I purchased 2014 F150 FX4 fully loaded and was burning 15-15.5L/100 km
until the truck died one day at 14,000 km…. Towed to Ford and they said it was crank sensor, ok we wait for Ford to send part (4 days) and the dealer split transmission from engine to replace. Tried to start…. still dead!. Ford Tech
decides its the "Tone Ring" ….. We wait again for sloooooow shipment (5 Days) because Ford hash't heard of the new way to ship in 2014 (FEDex, UPS, DHL, etc.) Transmission split from engine again and tone ring replaced. Technician finds loose spare bolt in bell housing that damaged tone ring originally causing breakdown. (Proof positive the sisters marry their brothers in Kentucky where truck was built). Since my truck was returned i am getting terrible gas millage(20.2 L/100KM). Thats a 25% change in fuel. As well there is a strange groaning sound coming from the engine a different speeds.

Dealer first told me after test driving "its under warranty drive till it breaks"
and fuel millage is not a warranty issue.
Manager is now involved and since told me its the waste gate on the turbo needs replaced but waiting for Ford to agree to surgery. He only ever seen that on a truck with 180,000 KM on it. (that was comforting) Things to look forward to.

Can anyone tell me if the turbo waste gate issue be affecting my gas milage?

Dealer didn't know what my milage has changed , but I assume its cause that noise and change in fuel usage basically happened at the same time.

I lodge a complaint regarding dealer, but Ford Canada really doesn't want to talk with their customers and brushes people off.

Thanks,

Once a happy customer …..

Well I'm thinking the dealership may be even more in order than I thought - which sucks. I decided to take a look at the MAF sensor and the air filter to just see how things looked. As you can see in the attachments - at least as far as I can tell - things looks fine. Obviously didnt look at the MAF with a microscope or anything but to the naked eye it was clean. The air filter - I can still make out the Ford stamps on it and the likes. Y'all mind taking a look at the pics and giving me your thoughts?

Any other ideas or things to look at? Any idea what the dealer may try to smack me for to check things out? At ~9k miles, I'd think that things would be warranty replaced *IF* it came to that, but I'd like to be semi prepared if I can. Not to mention, I don't know what sort of argument(s) there may be because of the leveling kit being installed by someone OTHER than the dealership..

I have a 2011 F150 5.0L King Ranch 2WD 3.55 gears on stock 20's that just turned 32,000 miles. The wife drives it daily to and from work, 32 miles round trip, mostly freeway driving at 60 mph. For the last 3 years the vehicle averaged 17.4 mpg, in city driving. Driving long distances on the interstate at 72 mph the vehicle regularly gets 19.8 mpg. I only use regular gas with 10% ethanol. Oil change every 5000 miles at Ford dealers Quick lane. This vehicle has been trouble free and I have had no warranty claims.

People need to understand that in small print under the avg the mpg varies. Trucks getting 12-22mpg sound about right depending on model, options, weight of the drivers foot. I have a eco with 3.31 my dad has a 5.0 with 3.73, both get AVG 16. Worse 11mpg (first tank i got a custom tune) best 21mpg highway at slow speeds (aka speed limit of 65)

Gas mileage was horrible towing 6 MPG running 73 mph against wind and hilly. Transmission downshifting to 4th or third and didn't want to up shift when going down hill. Engine was running smooth but felt like it had no guts. Ran like a normal non turbo. High rpm's. Tow/Haul was non existent. Transmission had the moaning issue in mornings.

Finally took to dealership. They did the transmission TSB and reflashed the engine. Engine ran somewhat better but transmission was hard shifting and and slipping in 6th. Pulling trailer (5500 lbs) it would be running about 60 mph and the engine rpms would increase about 1000 rmps or more and indicator would still be showing 6th gear. Took back to dealership did ride around with lead mechanic and he was able to duplicate the problem. They hooked it up to computer and found the transmission had corrupted files. Reflashed tranny. 100% better. Tow/Haul works shifts better. Ford rep was very helpful. I think her name is Brittany. They called me personally on several occasions to make sure dealership was taking care of me. Thanks Brittany.

Mileage up on towing now to 8.5 mpg with a 10 mph headwind.

Since the reflashing of engine and transmission. Prior to reflash of engine using a ultraguage monitoring different items most notably O2 sensors and timing. O2 sensors were showing .800 to .865 volts most of the time. Now it is .650 to .750 volts. Runs leaner. Also run only top tier 91 oct all the time now. Made no difference before. Timing at the base of a hill prior to reflash time would go to -3 and downshift. Now it will go to -3 or -6 and pull back to 0 - +3 and might downshift depending on incline or other factors. Most notably is the sound. Low rumble. Engine is working now like it should. I had also re gaped spark plugs. Originally they were all 35. I re gaped to 30. Replaced air filter. Was dirty with 30,000.

Last fillup I cleaned my exhaust tip with towels. I know have about 300+ miles on this tank of gas. I took my finger and rubbed it in the tip and found hardly any soot. Almost none.

Runs better and smoother.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this. I have ran this comparison twice on the same road traveled same mileage ect. The temps weren't exact but they were pretty similar and I went to 14.5 from 14.24 the premium non ethanol was 4.01 a gallon at the time and the 87 was 3.51 a gallon so it was costing approximately 3 cents more per mile to run the 91. I think the biggest factor to mileage with the ecoboost motor is the rpm range in which you run down the highway. I always go 80mph and that is roughly 2200 rpm, last night I slowed down to 68ish and 1800 rpm and I went from an average of 15 on the hwy to 19.5. This is my experience anyway. My dad has a 6" lift 35" tires and a performance tune from KEM which requires 91 and he can't break 13 mpg in town or on the hwy nor does he really care.
