Default Very SILLY Question...

I was flipping through my owner's manual just now and came across a section about starting your truck. Now, I've been driving for 20 years and never started a vehicle this way... In the manual, it says to turn the key to accessory, hit the brake pedal, THEN fire her up, while your foot's still on the brakes. I've always been firing the truck up fully first. THEN I hit the break pedal before hitting drive or reverse. Does this really matter?? It's a silly question, I know, but what's the difference, and why does the manual specify it this way? Are there really pros to starting the truck this way????

Its a safety thing.. Thats why its in the manual. The truck doesn't care if you push the brake or not.

"IF" the Nutreal safety switch fails it "could" start in gear. I never push the brake before starting.

Mine starts just fine without pressing the brake first.

Strange. I have never kept my foot on the brake when starting. There are many times I am not even in my truck when I start it.

I've been driving a manual 5 speed for the last 17 years so I press the brake when I start my new f150. I also still look for the clutch. Hard habits to break.

It's a preemptive CYA (Cover Your Asset) to preclude SUA (Sudden Unintended Acceleration) litigation (er, situations).

What about the remote start?

I rarely start the truck manually.

Hmmmm - I had to go try mine as I always step on the brake pedal if I am in the vehicle. Yes, the truck (2004) will start without the brake pedal depressed.
Most of my vehicles back in my formative years were manual transmissions so probably established the habit way back when.
The car (2010 SHO) will not start without pressing the brake pedal.
