Default Threaded hole in head

Hey I have a 2002 5.4l and I just replaced the engine after throwing a rod. Almost finished installing the new engine when I see a threaded hole about the size of a nickel on the inside of the left head. I have no clue what it is so I just bought some block plugs to see if one fits. Does anyone know if I'm missing a sensor of some sort or a plug? I believe the hole goes all the way through the head.

Not at the moment it's under the thermostat housing. I'll take a pic tomorrow when I attempt to put the plugs in.

Ok, well if you are pressed for time to get her running then go ahead and find a plug to block it off with and get rolling. Be sure to use Teflon tape on the threads so it don't leak.

Hmm looking at the pic, the location of the hole almost looks like the timing chain tensioner hole on the 4.0L engines the Explorer had.

Default What to do?

Not side what to do. Like I said I didn't notice it until after install, didn't even notice when I had it on the engine stand. I'll have to take the alternator off and double check if it goes all the way through. I just don't want to crank up my new engine and have it spew oil

I don't see any threads in the hole so there's a good chance it's just a casting blank.
