Default What to consider when buying a used Ecoboost

Hello guys, I have never owned a Ford truck before, but have always wanted to. I am currently looking for a 2009-2011 crew cab in the 22k to 24k price range. I have found 3 really nice trucks all a little different, only one has the Ecoboost. It's a 2011 Lariat completely loaded with 94,500 miles on it. He is asking 24k which is below book value. It is my favorite of the trucks but I am concerned about buying it because of the mileage and I know the 2011 was the first year of the Ecoboost in the F150. Now the truck is only going to be driven on weekends and to tow a smaller travel trailer. Once a year it will be used to pull the camper on a long cross country trip possibly 1,000 miles or so. The trailer will probably be 6,000lbs at the heaviest so from my research the v8 would probably make more sense for my use, but everything else about this truck I like a lot better then the others with the V8.

So my question is if I decide to go with the Ecoboost what should I be concerned about considering the miles on it? The seller says all work has been performed at the dealer and he gave me the Vin to check it out. I look forward to any advice or knowledge you can give me. Thanks

Diluted oil, stretched timing chain, gunk in the intercooler, check for oil leaks on the turbos. That's all I can think of at the moment. Post in the 09-14 section for more advice.

Find somebody with a access to IDS who can read the timing. Find out how many degrees it is out of spec to determine timing chain wear. That is really the only thing to worry about for most of them. If the timing chain is stretched it is expensive to repair. Other issues are much less common and really quite inconsequential most of the time.

Also make sure plugs have been replaced. I'm sure they need it if not. They don't make it 50,000 miles on the Eco often.

Is it just me, or do we have a new member creating a thread every 3 or 4 days asking if they should buy an ecoboost and what problems do they have.

My question to the OP, what do you look for on your other engine choice? Since you only asked about the EcoBoost.

I have never owned a turbo charged gas engine. I don't want to buy a truck and have to turnaround and put a bunch of money into it. The other 2 trucks I am looking at are lower miles and v8's, but they don't have the comfort options I want. From what I've read there are more things to go wrong with the Ecoboost than the simpler V8's. Just trying to make an informed decision. The Ecoboost intrigues me

I have posted a link below that will answer all your questions. All the motors in your three trucks will have had some issues. The 2011 you might be able to get an extended warranty.Maybe?

To the OP: If it were me, I would go with a known commodity, but I'm a conservative guy. Also- I would spend a little more time and money and find a Coyote v8- that is and will be a long-term guarantee for those of us who are faint of heart. In another 15 years or so, we will all know how a small displacement turbo charged engine in a 6000 pound truck stands up to the rigors of daily life( think: aluminum inter-cooler on a steady diet of salt spray). Till then- we're ALL guessing, including Ford.

Ok I see the Coyote is the 5.0 V8. The other trucks I am intersted in have the 5.4 V8. What is the general concensus on those engines?

I agree that the 11's might not be the best year. Then again, the newer ones could just as problematic. That said, with the mileage the prior owner may have powered through the major repairs and then dumped the truck. Or it could be he just wanted to trade it in before 100k. The ecoboost is a great motor for towing. You'll just love it. Just be sure to check the engine out - carefully. That and read up on the TSB's and see if the dealer can apply a couple as part of the sale.

I test drove the 5.4 and truly thought it was a dog of an engine. It just doesn't want to pull. This was my opinion when compared to the 5.0 and EB. The 5.4's did have problems with their cam phasers.
