Default Tailgate down myth

Here's some more fuel (pun intended) to debunk the myth that riding with the tailgate down helps MPG

One would think after all these years of testing and being proven dropping the gate actually increases drag and hammers fuel efficiency.

What the gate down does do is help with stability, I proved that to myself driving on the interstate with it up passing large trucks (18 wheelers) I would get blown around a bit but gate down it acted like a stabilizer and I could pass or be passed and not get jerked around from the wind push off a semi.

Its basicly a spoiler when the gate is down, even have the box sides to direct side to side airflow

The F150 screw weighs nearly 5000 lbs. I've never been blown around passing an 18 wheeler. Just sayin'.

But, if you believe something to be true, especially if you believe very, very hard, it must be true.

Right?

I should have been more specific, I experienced this while driving a Toyota p/u I had years ago.
