At 18, focus on value. Like most have said a ranger could be a good fit. However, be sure to look at a wide range of options. You might get a higher mileage F150 for the same price as a ranger due to the sheer number of F150's available for sale.
How much are you wanting to spend? 2WD or 4WD? What cab style?

haha, good job op. A lot of ppl forget they were 18 once. If $4k is your budget, unless you get supremely lucky, the only 150s you are going to find in that price range are going to be old, worn out, or both. You will get a newer less worn out ranger for the $$.

If you're looking to shuttle friends and family around a lot the Ranger might not meet your needs. Figure 2 small kids will fit in the back for short rides, or one adult. That being said, I was much the same during my highschool and college years, my Rangers were typically more reliable than many of my friends cars so I often drove and somebody had to sit in the jumpseat in the back.
The full sized extended cabs will offer a lot more room back there. Also, every other compact / midsized truck besides the Ranger is available as a crew cab. I've already mentioned the Tacoma and Frontier, but you can also find a crew cab S10, Colorado, or if you're desperate a Dakota. Just something to consider.

I still say a ranger is a good fit. My first truck was a 91 "Super" ranger. Extended Cab 4x4. It was an awesome first vehicle. I did go through manuals on it (4 tranny's total), but the rest of the truck was solid. Heck I sold it to my dad for the farm 15 years ago and it is till running to this day with over 800,000km's on it. Original motor!

The 86 Ranger I had was good. It would kill over sometimes, but hey....couldn't be too picky. lol "Upgraded" to an 02 Cavalier later on..haha. It worked for it's intended purpose..

I go for a f150 2wd if you are only spending 4K. You are going to get a truck with less miles and a few less things to go wrong. Just my 2 cents I live in a snow state and have only had 2wd trucks, but if thats what you have to have go for it. If you go for the ranger you could get a 4x4 there a little cheaper and they are good trucks.
