Default Starter Truck

Okay so I'm new to this site and to trucks. What I really need/want at this point is a decent looking truck, that gets decent gas mileage, for a decent price, but still has a powerful engine for having "truck duels" with my buddies, and getting work done. At 18 yrs old, what would you go with???

That's definitely true but I guarantee my standards for "decent looking" and "decent priced" are waaaayyy lower than yours

Agreed. I would focus on a truck that will get work done and you can use for a while until you're ready to upgrade later. JMO, don't base a vehicle purchase on whether or not you can out run/pull your buddies.

THIS. The 4.0 SOHC is a powerful enough motor if you get a 2001 or newer. Rangers are easy enough to work on and there hasn't been a major redesign since 93 so a surprising amount of parts are interchangeable and can be found a salvage yards. I've had 3 of them, and they all did more actual "work" than several of my friends trucks that felt the need to drive around in 3/4 ton trucks. Ranger's do pretty darn good off-road as well, it's much easier to negotiate tight trails in a Ranger than a full sized truck.

And I know this may be hearsay on a Ford forum, but the 2005 and newer Frontier with the 4.0 is a very powerful truck. 300 hp isn't out of the question with bolt-on modifications.

I agree with this. Had a 2004 Ranger with the 4.0 for 11 years. I beat the hell out of it, never had any problems, towed small boats, offroaded, hauled my dirtbikes... It did everything. At 18 I think a ranger is perfect.
