Default Rotors question

I have been doing my brakes for years on my older vehicles and never on a newer truck like I have now. 2011 ecobeast. I bought the truck used a year ago has about 42000 miles on it and I was informed my pads are worn out 3mm left all the way around. This seems like a for short life for brakes to me. But I looked at them myself and I would say it's time to change them for sure. My question is I am in a money crunch and will be doing them myself was curious on turning the rotors. They seem very smoothe from what I can tell I haven't take the wheels off yet but from what I can see. I have had some people tell me turning the rotors really is a waste of money because it's takes the metal off and just makes it smaller. Wanted some opinions. If I would be ok getting all brand new pads and just replacing them it would save me a lot of money. But then again I don't want to sacrifice potential safety. The money crunch is because of my son is on the way but that is also the safety concern. I the past I didn't care as much because it was just me and I wanted to save the money. Thanks in advance.

You can do a pad slap if you want. Won't hurt anything

If the rotors aren't warped or in bad shape, you can rough the surface up with emery cloth to break the glaze. Having the rotors turned to simply cut off the glaze is best though, it's ideal to have a fresh surface for the pads to break into. Safety first!
