rattling/vibration noise

rattling/vibration noise
while driving and approaching a upgrade or in head wind im hearing a rattling noise, like the tranny gears are loose or 4x4 is trying to engage, when this noise is happening and i put it in to 4x4 it stops but with a hard clunking. also if i drive with the overdrive off this noise rarely happens? pls any input would be greatly appreciated,thx
p.s ive brought it to a trans shop they put it on the computer but nothing showed up!

the only thing I have had happen is my wheel bearing went bad and that too sounded like the 4x4 was trying to engae. and when I put into 4x4 it went away. but it was a grinding all the time when it happend to me. I replaced the wheel bearing and havent had an issue since.
