Prepaid maintenance contract - thoughts
Just bought new 2014 STX crewcab.
I was given the sales pitch on both the extended warranty and the prepaid maintenance.
What are your guys thoughts on these? Useful on these trucks? I don't know the schedule for maintenance on this truck. Pick it up today.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks
Russ

Congrats on the new truck! You can get more information about ESPs and maintenance plans here: ESPs and Maintenance Plans Additionally, you can download a free digital copy of your Owner's Manual here: Owner's Manuals Information about scheduled maintenance begins on page 438 of the third printing.

Lots of discussions on the forums about this. Split between "I don't want to have to worry" and "the only people that come out ahead are the car companies (and other warranty providers)".
You can read the scheduled maintenance in your manual.
Consumer Reports recommends never buying any extended warranties as rarely do they work financially.

I bought the extended warranty (online, you'll save a ton of money) for the piece of mind. More for the electronics than the running works. I didn't see the need for the maintenance plan as I don't put enough miles on my truck to warrant buying one. However, if you decide to buy check the prices online for both plans. I bought from Flood Ford, and saved at bit over $600 on the price of a 7/75 $50 deductible Premium care ESP plan ($1110 Flood, $1750 my dealer). There are several dealers online, and it good to check them all as they change their prices from time to time. It is the same genuine Ford ESP your dealer will sell you at a higher price. You don't have to buy the plan the same day you buy the truck no matter what the finance guy tells you.

When I purchased my truck earlier this year my dealer was kind enough to work some ballpark numbers with me and we both agreed that unless you drive at least ~20,000kms (~15,000 miles) per year, the economics just don't make it worthwhile.

I drive less then 4k per year, so not worth it
I change my own oil & do a lot of my own work -brakes/easier stuff
In 9 years I've had a front brake caliper muck up -6 years after I bought it
Bought a new caliper & redid the front brakes just in case
-as I recall I think one of the clips broke
All this "possibly" due to something getting stuck -small rock ?
No damage to the rotor
I had one car I bought used & bought a Ext Service Plan
I only had it 2 years & cashed in what was left on the Policy when I traded the car in
Even when I drove 25k a year I did not buy service plans
--But again I know how to do a lot of the work myself

"Maintenance" contracts rarely cover no more than routine oil chanes and tire rotations. For the price wanted for the contract, NOT a value.
HOWEVER, I didn't mind at all giving $600 to have basically every component in my truck covered (except consumables) for 7 years - 75,000 miles.
More than likely having one major component replaced AFTER the manufacturer warranty runs would have been more than $600.
its more than peace of mind.

I just got a '14 EB FX4 2 weeks ago and came the closet I ever have to walking out of a finance office. The guy just would let up and ended up walking out with a 50k extended for and extra $3 on my payment. I was embarrassed for the guy with the hard sell he was putting on it. May be because I sell maintenance contracts but end users that maintain their own equipment are an accepted part of our business. The one that really got to me was when he mentioned that there was coverage that would cover the $400 key against breakage if I dropped it. I'm sure there's coverage somewhere that would cover a broken shoe lace but that's a risk I'm willing to assume.
He did mention an interesting tidbit of info about the coverage I got on the last truck. Because I traded before it expired I could get a partial refund on it. Has anyone here done that and give me a little guidance as to how to do it?

Be very careful when discussing monthly payments. They say 3/month more but it has been my experience at 2 different dealerships that they inflate the "base" price by about 10 bucks a month. Every time the bring out the box sheet I flip it over and make my own boxes. The boxes are cost of truck, taxes and fees, interest rate. Both times I did the math on my phone at a banking website and they were off. This is no coincidence. Don't buy any options whatsoever and you will see I am right. Then they say they were off a little and its actually cheaper for you!
