Poll: What do you think is more important Horsepower or Torque?
This is a big discussion in the drag racing world we either are involed in this conversation or overhear it just about every time we go to the track. I have been drag racing for 15 years now and never fails to come up.
Now to me one depends on the other but you can have all the horsepower in the world but if you do not have enough torque it is worthless.
I have never thought about this before in regards to my truck only for the car that we take to the track so i am curious to know what you guys think about this subject in the " truck world"
I would say that i believe they are both equally important.

Horsepower is just a number that is derived from torque(work) and rpm. You can't have horsepower without torque so I would say if you don't have any torque you don't move.

On the other hand, if you have NO horsepower, you have nothing to produce the TORQUE..........
can't really have one without the other, but I would guess a mechanical engineer could clarify more on this topic......

Im studying to be a mechanical and Energy engineer. but....it depends on your tq curve that you want. if i remember correctly, a higher tq number means you can have more pull power, but yet your HP is giong to be a tad bit low and your 0-60 time will be higher. and if you have a high HP and low tq your truck will struggle under load. and if you tune your tq curve is up above like 4k rpms, our trucks arnt meant to handle very much above 5k. theyre trucks not formula 1 cars.
but all in all a good balance of both is good. theres all sorts of different things to make up for losses in HP for a high tq, like re-gear, super or turbo charger, cam, exhaust CAI...etc.etc

I love Diesels (to bad i cant currently afford one), and they are a perfect example of torque over hp. hp is a biproduct of torque. You can have a cummins 12 valve with 200hp and 500 lbft of torque.
