what engine in both?
either way, run. fast. far. keep your truck, look into why it's getting such poor mileage. I don't know what's in your truck but even a 5.8 should get significantly better in a regular cab (looks like a short bed 2wd?).

I actually like your's better. You may just need a tune-up to get back in the game. First thing is check your air filter. A dirty air filter doesn't help mpg's at all.
IMHO, it is nice of your Dad too offer you his newer truck. So, don't forget to thank him either way you go.

He's offering to give you an 05 for your 92? Sounds like a pretty easy decision to me

Newer, better fuel economy seems an easy decision. Also easier to diag OBDII. I'd take that one.

that 92 is mint, you'd be a fool to let go of a classic like that. might be harder to diagnose but then, it's easier to fix and less likely to give trouble especially if the internals are as good as that body.

I think your missing the key factor the op posted about. Here again for clarification.

OP, if you want the instant improvement and trust the 05, go for it. I'd be seeing why the 92 is getting such low mpg first, even if you traded temporarily.

His father offered him a truck that is 13 years newer, that gets much better mileage, is in (I assume) good mechanical condition and is much safer and more capable in every sense.
He is 16 and trying to afford gas, and your response is to keep the old gas guzzler that has issues and put money into trying to figure out why the mileage is so poor, when he's already having issues affording gas? This makes no sense.
I understand the sentimental value of a nice older truck, but it doesn't sound like they're selling it (as far as I can tell) only that his dad would be taking it over.
