My guess is that anything that involves the driveshaft being "twisted" means abuse - seeing that they have tested the shafts to withstand a certain amount of force and twisting torque. I'm sure there can be a defective shaft that might twist like that ... but ODDS are that if it twists, you've pushed it well past its limits (abuse) ... or you ran into something where the shaft got dented and weakened, allowing it to twist before it should have.

Taking all that into consideration, if there was a weak spot in the shaft due to manufacturing defect, the shaft would most likely just snap rather cleanly ... not twist like a twizzlers stick then snap after that.

long story short ... 99.9% of twisted driveshafts are abuse related ... clean snaps are mfg defects ... it would not be until you truly studied the shaft scientifically that you could determine if the twisting was due to some sort of defect w/ the shaft (thin spot in the steel tube, etc.).

^^Ok....lifted F150. That's a hard sell to Ford. Maybe the OP should have switched to 4L,.... because their obviously was too much torque and not enough gear to compensate for the oversized tires. Unless...of course Ford put the lift kit on(doubtful). :frown:

OP, how long after the incident was that picture taken? I agree that it was likely wringed out for awhile. What would you have done previously that would have caused that - anything? I am trying to understand why the dealership determined abuse..... maybe they are onto something and maybe they aren't.
The picture is about a day after. I rarely use 4 wheel except to leave a stop sign or Red light in icy conditions. I've never had the wheels bite hard enough to do damage like that. The dealer told me I must of had the truck rev'd out and it suddenly grabbed traction. Which is not the case. Being in snow with grass under and crappy stock passenger tires I feel Ford has failed us in the front drive shaft area.

I suppose the reason it doesn't look fresh it was driven down a wet gravel road to get home. No chance of the shaft being dented the truck has never bottomed out or been high centred. For those saying it was user error I ask what the f"@& is 4 wheel drive for, driving down a plowed street to get to the mall? Next your gonna tell me I cant haul anything in it. I Wish I had a picture of where this happend a car would've made. I've hit a lot worse a lot harder with a lot less and never had anything break in such a pathetic fashion.

Check to make sure the front and rear ratios are the same. Other than that, it looks like abuse. Maybe driving on a hard surface in 4x4. In 36 years working in a dealership the only thing I've seen close to that was a cop car that went from reverse to drive during a pursuit that twisted and snapped the trans output shaft just like that.
