No grab handles on driver's side?

A friend of mine has a 2012 FX4 crew and we went riding around yesterday. I noticed that he had running boards so I asked why he had purchased them because I was pretty sure his previous 07 Lariat didn't have them? He told me that they are necessary to get into the truck. He said without the driver's side grab handle that ford deleted on the current body style you need the running boards to hop up into the truck!! So not only did ford delete a helpful part that you didn't have to pay for (cost savings), but they made it necessary to buy running boards (cost $635). I started looking around after this conversation and noticed that almost all of the current f150s have running boards. They don't look good, i know this is a subjective statement, but they definitely add weight and they definitely reduce your ground clearance!
The best solution, though a rather expensive one, was the installation of Amp Research power running boards similar to what comes standard on the Platinum. These boards deploy into a position that is ergonomically correct to get in and out so the grab handle becomes less necessary. This should also cut down on excessive seat wear.
And when they are retracted the trucks clearance isn't compromised. IMO it also looks much better than those juvenile, boxy running boards that came with the truck.

To the post of “X2 stupid”, was that referring to no grab handle or the 6” lift?
I'm 5'11" at 210 and use the driver side grab handle on my '01 150 every time I get in the thing.
To me it seems wrong to use the steering wheel and quite frankly, I don't think it works very well as a grab handle.
I hate running boards and find them more of a hindrance than a help, especially exiting the vehicle. About the only thing running boards do for me is get my pant legs dirty and cause leg bruises.
I decided to keep my ’01 instead of getting a ’13 partly due to no grab handle. Had I gotten the ’13 I would likely have removed the running boards, or is that “running tubes”.
To each their own.

Bought Dee Zee NXT black on black running boards for my truck after I sold the chrome stock nerf bars. Haven't seen any stock running boards/nerf bars that I ever thought looked good IMO, except maybe the Raptor's but they're $900. Hopefully one of the aftermarket companies will come up with a drivers side grab bar.
