Issue: How to reset your engine light

Solutions:
  • Disconnect the battery and reconnect it
  • Reset your engine light by using an OBDII reader to clear the codes
  • Take it to an auto parts store to borrow an OBDII reader or for them to read your codes
Note: Your check engine light will keep turning back on until the issue is resolved. It is best to address the issue and fix it, as ignoring it may lead to more expensive repairs.

Default Need help with check engine light. How to reset??

It has been just over a year that we had our check engine light on and fixed due to an egr replacement on our 02 F150. Now it is on again. I was wanting to know if anyone out there has been successful at resetting this light so we could go about our daily everyday business.
I cannot afford to have a mechanic charge me an arm and a leg right now to fix something I am hoping can be reset.
Are there any experienced folks out there that can give me some good advice to reset this??
Thanks in advance.

Well i had it come on in my 02 at around 40 or 50K. Luckily Ford had sent me a letter stating that they were extending the warranty on some part for the Emissions or EGR system, I'm not sure what the part was. But it was the reason for my light and was fixed for free.
Go to Auto Zone, They can scan your OBD port and give you the codes for it. They may even be able to reset it. Only thing is I would guess after a few drive cycles if it's not fixed it will probably come back.

You can either hook up and OBDII scanner and reset it that way or just disconnect your negative post battery cable for 5 minutes. Then put it back on and that should clear your ECM.

Does the extended bumper to bumper cover this EGR problem? Originally a year ago I had to pay for it in full. It was done at a place other than a ford house.
Also, does it cost to have it scanned at auto zone??

Warranty? If you had it fixed elseware then probably not now but if your still under warranty it wouldn't hurt to try.

You can reset the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) by disconnecting the Neg Cable and touching it to the positive, and no it won't blow up - it does complete circuit. You can reconnect right away this way.

Another way is to pull the little orange 5amp PCM fuse under the dash (it's #20 on mine).

Also , theres a PCM maxi fuse in the PDB box under the hood that you can unplug .

These methods cause you system to retest , then reset . If your within your PCM's parameters it will learn and adjust in the best interest of your motors capabilities.

If you fix a problem and do not reset - the MIL(Malfunction Indicater Lamp) illumination has a 75 mile drivecycle life. It will go out eventually. If you reset and still have ann issue, it will illuminate again within 75 miles .

Thumbs up Reset the Check Engine Light F150

Many thanks to F150Texan and Jbrew for the tips. My check engine light comes on every six months or so. In the past, I just slipped into AutoZone and they'd reset it. About a month ago, the light came on again, I went to AutoZone: they wouldn't reset it because of lawsuits filed against them. Soooooo I read the posts from people smarter than I am (read usernames above) Removed the terminals, and while I had them off, cleaned and greased them. Reconnected them, everything works fine....and the check engine light is OFF! Thank you again, folks. Great forum here with very helpful suggestions. You guys made my day.
