Default Mountain Bike Rack

Me and the wife just recently purchased mountain bikes.
I'm looking to see what you guys have done for solution to mount your mountain bike in the bed of your truck when you're traveling. I know they specifically sell mounts that you actually bolt down to the bed of your truck but you have to remove your front wheel of your bike and secure the forks in this mount.
I'm trying to avoid removing the front wheels from our bikes to mount them in the back of the truck.

So if you guys have any pictures of any mounts whether you bought them or it's homemade and they allow you to keep your front wheel installed on your bike let's see them

Why not a hitch-mounted rack?

When you say Travel. do you mean like hundreds of miles or from your house to a trail in your town? Do you want a bolt down because you are leaving them in the bed over night?

Just went from an SUV with a hitch rack to my new F150. I plan on doing this for majority of my bike transporting. Couple buddies have them and they work fine. I also plan on making a lockable fork mounted option for the bed if I plan on leaving the bikes unattended for a while.

Theres a few companies that make them so do some research

I mostly use the tailgate pad or blanket and just throw them over the tailgate.

Been doing this for 10 years.

I'm with you -- removing wheels is a pain. All of my mountain bikes have 20 mm thru-axles which are a bit more of a pain to take on and off. I prefer transporting w/ wheels and seats on the bikes.

I also have a Yakima hitch-mounted tray rack. Works well for trips where the bed is full. It is kinda heavy, not ideal for putting on or taking off every ride. But the tray style is the way to go if you're going with a hitch mounted rack. Stay away from the style that hangs the bike from its frame (JMHO, of course).

Throw the bikes over the tailgate with a blanket or pad and if that is not desired then try making a PVC bike Rack, there're a ton of links on google for PVC bike racks.

Yeah, I agree. I have a Thule and although it works great, it is heavy and at bit of a pain to install for just short day trips.

I use to throw a blanket over the tale gate gut the bikes still more. I just got a Dakine tail gate cover. It is great. It doesn't slid or anything. It got it on sale only paid $80 it fits 7 bikes. Normal price is between 120 and 110. I also have a 4 bike hitch but I like this way better.

It is either a mostly permanent mount or something you just put on for vacations (my case).

If you go hitch mount, make sure it will allow your tailgate to lower. Mine is about 1/4" too high -- the gate can come down, but if any weight is placed on the gate, it will contact the rack.
