Default Manual transmission repair

Anybody ever rebuild their manual transmission in their F150? I'm looking for any hints or tips as I have mine in several pieces and am having problems removing the locknut on the main shaft. I went to several places looking for a locknut wrench, but can only find one for a Toyota. I am limited on tools & funds!

Thanks for any info that's available!

I rebuilt the TOD 4 speed on my '87 a few times. There weren't any locknuts on it but a few good pairs of snap ring pliers are a must.

Thanks! I noticed a few of those pesky snap rings myself, but I don't think the pliers will help on this nut! I even tried my 12" crescent wrench on it, but it wasn't big enough. Can you lock the shaft to keep it from turning?

The only way I can think to lock it would be to jam a screwdriver in the teeth of two meshing gears. The gears are hardened so they would be pretty tough to damage.

Thanks! I played around with it today & figured out how to lock the first/second gears & the third/fourth gears by sliding a ring up. Worked great. And an 18" crescent wrench made good work out of the pesky locknut. I really appreciate the feedback - being a female, you wouldn't believe the looks I get when I walk into a parts store & ask for info!

Thanks again!!
