Default lower ball joint

Well the manual says that lower ball joints are not replaceable,on my 2001 f-150 4x4, and must be replaced by means of replacing the lower control arm. Is this true? If not true, do I have to remove the axle shaft on the 4 wheel drive to press out the old ball joints? This will be a first for me replacing ball joints.

Autozone will also lend,or rent you the tool to press them out. Might as well do them both while you have the tool. The upper, you ones have to replace the control arm.
