Default Loud Clunk in Reverse

Hi everyone, need help on my '97 F 150 4x4 with a clunk, when I put the truck in reverse. It is an automatic and I have a small leak in the pinion gear at the pumpkin. Only does it in reverse. I replaced the universal joints, but don't know where to go next.

Thanks,
Rick

May try to have a friend simulate this noise while you get in a SAFE position to watch and listen to the driveline. Try to identify if the noise is coming from the tranny, driveshaft, axle, or brakes.

One thought is that with the leaking pinion, something may be loose in the diffy.

Default F150 with clunk

The mileage is around 138,000 miles. We did replace the universal joints. Also a customer of mine is a good trany guy and he did have his helper get under and listen, but couldn't pin it down. So I though someone may have gone through the same thing. Thanks for you advice.
Oh! I too am just driving it.

It could be a little extra backlash causing it, pull the cover and have someone twist the driveshaft while you watch the gears for slack. It probably wouldn't hurt to change the fluid anyway and as far as a gasket goes----black RTV is all the my wife's cousin uses at a driveline shop. They built all of my race car rears and I never had one leak, ever...

We found that the trany mount was bad. It is a rubber mount in the center of the truck. You will have to remove the cross over mount from the frame 1st and jack the trany so it does not fall. When you remove the cross over it will expose the mount and will have to remove bolt to the trany itself. The mount are not expensive and it will take around 2 hrs from start to finish. We needed 2 guy to do the job

check your motor mounts too. I had the same issue I found a bad tranny mount but I also found that one of the motor mounts was junk as well.
