I'm a total newbie to auto repair. I watched my grandpa change oil on his truck once when I was probably 10. My dad never messed with auto repair or regular maintenance so he never showed me anything and I grew up in a freaking bubble. I NEED NEW BRAKES AND I WANT TO DO THEM MYSELF!! Help... please!?

I have a 2010 4WD 4.6L Crew Cab Long bed truck. I need front and rear brakes. So my questions are as follows.

1. Where can I buy the most affordable/best value pads and rotors? For front and rear.

2. Which DIY video/writeup would be easiest for me to follow for my truck?

3. Do I need a special jack? I don't have any.

4. Any tips you can give me? I have basic tool knowledge so there is a flicker of hope for me.

Brakes, being a safety item, should be done by someone who knows what they are doing. A simple mistake could turn into a DISASTER. For you and everyone else on the road.

Seriously - thank you! I'm pretty excited to do this. I've got a room to swear in with a punching bag in it too. Will drop it by the dealership for a brake check just to make sure I did it ok. I just want to do it myself and gain the knowledge.

Is there a website for the best deals on brakes for our f150s? My friend is always raving about his civic forum having a guy that sells brakes to members for a discount.

Do you have a floor jack and jack stands? If not, that is a major concern. You can do it I am sure, but please protect yourself. Some even slide the wheels under the vehicle in conjunction with jack stands. Safety first!

Brakes are all over, check out rockauto.com. Centric rotors are a good value and great OEM replacement. I love their pads as well, but Wagner Thermoquiets are great for value and standard replacements.

If you don't want to order online, I've always found NAPA to be reasonable.

Breaker bar for leverage. Sometimes those bolts can get pretty rusted tight. Jack stands mentioned above are a necessity.

Don't buy cheap pads - those are for installation right before you put the "for sale sign" on the window of your vehicle.
