Devices are equipped with a temporary locking mechanism which rigidly binds the engine to the transmission when their speeds are nearly equal, to avoid slippage and a resulting loss of efficiency.

Impelling losses within the torque converter reduce efficiency and generate waste heat. In modern automotive applications, this problem is commonly avoided by use of a lock-up clutch that physically links the impeller and turbine, effectively changing the converter into a purely mechanical coupling. The result is no slippage, and virtually no power loss.

To add to the post above me, by turning the setting down (example: 4th gear -6) the TC will lock 6mph sooner in 4th gear. When your TC is locked you are getting the best MPG possible so turning it down will net better mpg's and lower tranny temps. Locking it later will allow you more power going up hills and accelerate quicker. I recommend turning it down. I have it set at -6 for 4th gear and I can lock it at like 38mph and get an IMPG of 23-25mpg

Ok thanks. So do you leave your other gears alone or do you change those too. And what about the unlock?

I put 3rd at -4 when I'm towing w/o 4th gear and I don't touch the unlock points.

So if you put all gears in the positive setting would it give you more torque or less? Example being if you put 1st at 2. 2nd at 3. 3rd at 4 and 4th at 4 or 5. What would a setting like that do. and if you adjust the lock would you not want to adjust the unlock the same as well

If you adjust the lock in the way you describe above you will have to be going that many mph faster in each gear for the TC to lock this will result in worse gas mileage but if it's unlocked while going up a hill it won't need to downshift. Having said that you will unlock the TC anyways when you go up a hill so why waist the gas just getting to the hill??

I have found that adjusting the UNLOCK points is unnecessary. I have had my LOCK set 3rd @-4 and 4th @-6 for a year now and it helps gas mileage when going through the city.

Also there is no point in changing the lock/unlock of 1st or 2nd because unless you use your shifter to stay in those gears only you never lock the TC while accelerating in those gears.

The all caps above is only to ensure you don't mix up my settings with locking or unlocking.
