You must be a real A-hole to deal with. My 2013 XLT I got listed for $44,600 I got $12,000 off MSRP and did the deal over phone and email. Very easy to do with my dealer. As the sales guy got me on my way he thanked me for the business and said see you in 2 years when you buy again. I have bought several vehicles from him over the years.

This is exactly NOT the way to buy a vehicle. The dealer is entitled to a fair profit. You are entitled to a fair price. If both parties deal in that manner, then it works. If they don't, then it won't.
Some dealers are a-holes. Some salesmen at dealers are a-holes. And many customers are too. More customers are ill-informed, have no idea how to negotiate for a vehicle, don't know the invoice before they come in, fall for sales tactics that are used in every industry, etc.

So then the rebates and incentives come off the invoice too so the difference from MSRP to invoice is what the dealer has to play with and hopefully still make a profit?

All customer rebates come from the manufacturer's pocket, not the dealer's pocket. So if you buy at invoice, they still make their $900 (in the above example) even if you have $8,500 in rebates.
MSRP is meaningless to the dealer.

No. The dealer has already made a profit if he sells at invoice. See the link I provided which discusses "holdback", which on the F-150s I believe is 3%. So on a $30,000 invoice price, they've already made $900 profit. And the more they sell, the more they get back. And sometimes there are dealer incentives that you the customer don't see.
