Thinking of trading my 12 5.0 on a 13 ecoboost.
So I'm looking to trade my 2012 with 30k miles on a 2013 Certified used Ecoboost with 35K miles. Dealer wants $5500 to trade. I'd like them to do better, but it seems all the dealers are in the same ball park. I guess the only reason I'm looking to trade is I want a truck that will pull my camper a little better. Not super impressed towing wit the 5.0 and 3.55 gears, but it gets the job done. But sometime in the near future I'm gonna be upgrading to a bigger camper and I'm trying to plan a head with my pickup.
Is it worth the $5500 to upgrade to an ecoboost with max tow option? I've honestly never even driven an ecoboost yet, but planning on looking at this one this week.

You could re-gear your truck for much less and tow just as well. You could save another 1k and supercharge yours and pull anything. You could probably custom turbo yours for the same 5.5k and pull anything. You could drop 5.5k for a down payment on an 6.7 diesel and pull anything.
That much money for a lateral trade dosent make much sense in my book.

Depending on how big of an upgrade you are doing with your travel trailer it may make more sense to jump to a F250. You don't need a diesel, a a 6.2 will do the job and return decent mileage. A super duty will have bigger brakes and higher payload. Just another option to consider. I think the max I would go would be about $3k in your situation. You would be getting a CPO truck and a comparable extended warranty is probably $1,500 add another $1,500 for it being a year newer and Ecoboost.

I bought a 2014 with the 5.0/3.55's two months ago. I drove the 3.5 with 3.31's and the performance was almost identical. On paper the 3.5/3.31 will tow more, but it isn't much, around 1500 lbs, IIRC. The 3.5 is rated 1 mpg better, but in the real world I doubt there is any difference. I also found that all else being equal the 3.5 was $1500 or so more expensive.
I passed on a 2013 with the 3.5/3.31 gears with 27,000 miles and bought the 2014 with 5.0/3.55 gears with 17,000 miles. Bottom line price was almost exactly the same.
If the 3.5 you are looking at has 3.55 or 3.73 gears, then I'd be VERY tempted to trade. My BIL has that combo and it does have more power. But the fuel mileage is about the same as mine.
Had I found the 3.5/3.55 combo in a used vehicle I might have paid the difference. But every single truck I looked at with the 3.5 had 3.31 gears.

I think you guys are right. If I'm gonna trade I might as well trade up to a F250. Just didn't want to spend the extra money.. In the long run it's a better choice.

Looks like both trucks have bigger than stock tires. That will affect towing on both but the EB can handle less gear easier. My 2012 screw had the 5.0 with 3.73's. It towed fantastic with stock tires. Did fine with 295 70 18 Trail Grapplers. But the gear made a difference.
My 14 EB has 3.55's and 34" Duratracs. I don't feel like it lost much but I haven't towed with it.
You'll just have to drive the EB and judge. Both are great looking trucks. If the EB has 3.31's and bigger tires, I wouldn't trade. 3.55's or better and I'd consider it.

If that's a max tow then it would have 3.73 gears. That would be a great tow vehicle. Add some Timbrens or airbags and you could tow a house.
