Fuel Mileage Questions
Hello all, I am new to this forum and I have seen quite a few posts regarding the fuel mileage of the 5.4L Triton Engine and I am wondering if there is any hope left for the fuel mileage in my truck.
To begin I have a 2007 Ford F-150 Lariat Supercab 2WD with the 5.4L Triton Engine. Currently the truck has about 97000 miles on it. I purchased the truck with about 85000 miles and was averaging a combined city/highway mileage of 17-18 MPGs. One the truck got to about 93000 the MPGs began to drop off until I was averaging about 12 MPGs and I was noticing a rough idle. Recently I had the spark plugs done, fuel filter, air filter changed; and the throttle body and mass air flow sensor cleaned. I also had the PCM reset. Considering all of these factors and several tanks of gas I am still only averaging about 12 MPGs. The truck does have a 2'' level in the front and 20" wheels with P275.55.R20 tires but I am not sure if this would cause such a drastic drop in fuel mileage. I have an appointment with the Ford dealer tomorrow to have the truck completely looked over and checked for updates. The service manager said that he would also contact Ford to see what they recommended while the truck was in.
I am looking to see if anyone else has had a similar issue and had success with remedying the problem. I understand that the truck is heavy and has an engine that does not necessarily get the best fuel mileage but I am hoping to get even 15-16 out of the truck.

Scott, Thank You for the advice. I have recently changed the oil and filter. I try to change it between 4-5000 miles. I am using motor craft oil and filter in a synthetic blend. I have heard that switching to full synthetic can help. Anyone else heard this?

Not sure how oil impacts your engine but for the 2014 3.5L F-150 EcoBoost, the Pennzoil 5W-30 Ultra Platinum w MC O-filter seems to be the optimum solution. MC oil has a bad NOACK rating and is either or almost in the non-acceptable range.
It seems to me that something certainly happened going from 17-18mpg to 12 is over a 30% reduction. Do you have any idea of what type of 85K mileage the prior driver(s) did? Big diff btw wear & tear on a lot of towing and good interstate hwy driving...
