Oh it had the power to tow. It certainly did not have much get up and go though. I preferred years ago the GM V8(2004-2008), I know Ford did up their power on the 5.4 later in the 2000's, but I just was not impressed by it, however this 5.0 won me back.

20' BassCat, and towed it over 300 miles one way. When I got to where I was going I still had a 1/4 tank left. I have the 3.55 gears on my 13' FX4, and the truck only had 1000 miles on it. Got the same mileage on the way home towing at 70mph. My gas mileage seems to be better at 70mph than less than that speed. 20" tires too if that makes a difference?

Gearing is a big difference at highway speeds, each truck will be different. My Tundra with 4.30s gets her best mileage around 55-60mph. My brother in laws Titan with 2.97 gears, best mileage is 60-65mph.

Mileage comparison with a Tracker Targa v18 Combo 4000lbs approximately

Tundra @ 60mph = 11mpg(no wind) 9-10(with small wind) 7-9(heavy headwinds)
Tundra @ 55mph = 12mpg(no wind) 10-11(small wind) 9-10(heavy headwinds)

Keep in mind, the Tundra will pull close to 10,000lbs and the mileage only drops to around 8-9mpg pulling 9500lbs with no winds....with headwinds she's down into 7-8 mpg range. The lower gears will not pull as well with heavier loads, thus get the rear end that will do what you need it to do.

Titan @ 60 mph = 14.8mpg(no wind) 13-14(with small wind) 11-12(heavy head winds)

Haven't tested the Titan anymore, but you can see the relation of the gearing. Although each truck power band is different, the gearing is a major player in mileage. Titan will only pull 7100lbs in current configuration... the max tow Titan has a 3.33 rear end and tops out at 9500lbs towing.

Back to the OP, the new GM direct injected engines are very efficient but only with the proper rear end and weight configuration. Your still firing 8 cylinders vs 6 cylinders on the EB and in the end 8 cylinders will use more fuel. I honestly can't wait to get my EB and see how it compares with a 3.73 rear end on the same boat setup.

My wifes nephew just bought an 04 GMC Denali 1500HD 6.0 with everything 4w steering and everything that you can imagine with only 77k miles, and nothing works. GM has always had electrical gremlins. Their engines go forever. He only paid 5k for it so I guess he got a good deal for nothing working on it.

I'd love to see the data that supports that claim. I'm not cheer leading for Ford but Chevy / GM would be the last vehicle on earth I'd ever consider buying based on reliability. My opinion of course worst PoS vehicles I've ever owned, I may not be CBS but you heard it here first.

Lol I'm just messing with you. That statement may be partially true, however it's probably talking about initial quality. 100,000 miles from now the Ford will be running fine and the GM be in the service bay trying to figure out why it has so many electrical problems. I have a lot of experience with both GM and Ford vehicles and I can tell you it will be a cold day in you-know-where before I buy another GM anything. Government Motors can keep their junk.

Owned 5 Chevys until '13 screw xlt I just purchased. Main reason for switch was back seat for kids. Not much bad to say about Chevy (last was '11 crew) but man this ford is smooth, quiet and powerful. Rebates made the 5.0 a steal as well. Love the truck but will look at all models next time as changes come quickly and can be dramatic from brand to brand.
