Default F150 NOOB, a little help please

Thanks for the forum...

Have about $8-$10k budget for an extra cab F150/250 and I'm looking at everything from a mid 80's to 2007-ish model year. Was going to go for a the classic 70's w/ a 390 like i had when i was a kid but now I'm old and PS/PB, AC and leather sounds nicer. Using the truck to tow a 5k lb boat on the weekends.

so, I'm seeing tons of options in motors and wondering what should I stay AWAY from?

Live in FL by the way.

Opinions are appreciated, thanks all!

Can't comment on much pre-1997, but for the most part the 4.6 and 5.4 are solid, I would definitely stay away from 2004-2005 5.4 engines, as they seem to have a lot of issues with camshaft phasers. The 5.4 3 valve in (04-08) also had problems with spark plugs breaking off and getting stuck inside of the head of the engine.

I would always encourage to get the newest truck you can afford, but then again that's personal preference.
