I've scanned over this thread at least a dozen times since it was posted hoping someone would chime in and enlighten me as to what an "assist bar" is.

I'm thinking he means what's often called the "oh crap handle". 04-08 have one on the driver and passenger side. Since the driver will probably only use it for getting in/out and not in an "oh crap" situation, assist bar certainly makes more sense.
IIRC it's 12mm. I loosened mine when I ran the microphone for my stereo. Although most of the time when I don't know what size socket to use I just keep trying them until one fits... it'd take a lot longer to work on my truck if I posted a new thread each time.

I work on a lot of late model trucks and have for years. 12mm isn't something that any of the big three use much if any on their vehicles.

I would be interested in putting one of these on the drivers side of my new truck. Anyone know if this is possible? I don't know how it's mounted underneath, but I imagine it might be possible to find a part somewhere where they drive on the wrong side of the road
