Default Winter blend sucks for ecoboosts!!!!

Midwest MPG Update

It appears midwest and northern states winter blend fuel (also 10% ethanol) as well as the bitter cold air plays HELL on EcoBoost MPG's. I got 17.5-18mpg driving it home 45 minutes on back roads the week I bought it Dec 2013. I have no idea what fuel the dealer used to fill the tank but it obviously was not winter blend.

On my next fill up winter blend apparently was out and I was getting 12-13mpg city and only 15-16mpg highway. I even reset my tripmeter while on flat lands expressway doing 65mph and I got 15.x mpg. It's been this way since the week after Christmas til the 1st week of March 2014.

So now that March 1st has hit, I guess some of the stations have already been getting Summer blend fuel in. My MPG's jumped up to 18.1mpg on my 45 min drive to work on regular suburb streets. Most of it was stop n go too with 35-45mph speed zones.

2013 CC FX4 with 3.73 Eco - 2300 miles.

It kills the mileage on the 3.7 too. Yesterday it hit nearly 50 in Chicago and I was back up to normal. Summer is coming! Can't wait

You're not kidding.. We use ethanol all year long in downstate NY, so our mileage already suffers here.. Then we switch to a winter blend and it gets worse.

My Fuelly numbers don't lie.. For the past 6 months, my avg MPG with my EB has been 13.7 MPG.. My last 3 tanks were 12.6, 14.6, and 12.2 MPG..

The colder temperature also contributes quite a bit to the reduced fuel economy.

The cold temps effect it way more than the winter blend gas.

I decided to do some comparison of MPG between my previous vehicle (2010 Nissan Frontier CC 4WD) and my 2013 F-150 Lariat w/EcoBoost Screw/4WD as far as my real MPG results versus the EPA advertised MPG for each vehicle.

My mileage mix is 80% Hwy/ 20% City (the Nissan, was more like 50/50)

The F-150:
Miles: 9847
Gallons: 691.693
Hwy/City 80/20
Actual: 14.24
Adv City 15
Adv Hwy 21
Adv Combined 17
Diff From Sticker:
-0.76 City (Worse than advertised)
-6.76 Hwy (Worse than advertised)
-2.76 Combined (Worse than advertised)

The Nissan Frontier:
Miles: 60918
Gallons: 3724.21
Hwy/City 50/50
Actual: 16.36
Adv City 14
Adv Hwy 16
Adv Combined 19
Diff From Sticker:
+2.36 City (Better than advertised)
+0.36 Hwy (Better than advertised)
-2.64 Combined (Worse than advertised)

Question on the Nissan Frontier Adv numbers: If it gets 14 city, and 16 hwy, how is the average of the two 19? Doesn't make sense.

Oops. Because I typed it wrong. It's EPA sticker is 14 city, 19 highway and 16 combined. The correct numbers are below:

Listed fuel MPG and the reality have always been different. Far too many variables include to ever have it be accurate for everyone. I always kid of allowed 10% difference for real driving. That seems pretty accurate.

Summer time update, after a few thousand miles and regular blend 87 octane, I've discovered how to get the best MPG's.
Mind you this is the truck in my Avatar which is a Supercrew FX4 4x4 2013 EB.

I drive 100% suburban Chicago roads to and from work. Mind you I work 3rd shift, so I'm able to avoid rush hour traffic.
I've managed to get 19.2 MPG this past 100 miles by keeping an egg under my pedal and keeping it under 1400rpm give or take.
I'm at close to 200 miles now and I've punched it a few times so my MPG's has suffered slight but I'm still over 18.x mpg average.
This is my 2nd tank practicing this,

So moderate temperatures and summer blend fuel are what the Turbo's operate best on with mild driving.
You can cruise in 6th gear between 45mph to 50mph to get the best MPG's is what I've found.

Also remember that it's a truck and has other functions besides looking badass. You probably didn't buy it thinking you'll get great gas mileage with this vehicle. I use mine all the time for hardware store runs. Not like we're driving Miata's trying to pick other dudes up!
