Angry 87 Ford F150 sputters and dies.

I, am new to this so please be patient. My 87 F150 300 6cyl. sputters and stalls after 20-30 minutes of driving. I have to let it set for 15 to 20 min. before it will restart and then it will go another 3 to 5 min. I can let it idol with no problem. I have had electric fuel pump and relay replaced but problem is still there. I found similar posts but not exactly the same. Can anyone help? Thanks for listening.

Default First Things First:

Check the data for your truck to determine if the electronic engine management system is EEC-IV/ OBD1. If it is, then a scan of the system may turn a code to give you an idea what component has gone south. The scanner can be purchased for about 35 bucks, Actron CP-9015 for Ford, or Advance Auto Parts personnel will do a free scan for you.

The symptoms you describe point to a component that fails when it gets hot. The ignition coil, assuming the truck has one, could be the culprit.

A fuel system vapor lock could be another cause.

FYI: I would not have replaced the fuel pump unless I had first tested the system pressure to determine that the pump was a bummer....but, what's done is done. At least you can scratch that off as the trouble source.

Thanks for the help Kattumaram! The high pressure pump was bad but the wiring harness from selector switch was fried. Since these are no longer available I'm searching wrecking yards. If I can't find one there I'll do some creative wiring. Thanks again for your help.
