Default Driver's Side Door Handle/Cable Broke

My driver's side door handle is broken, and the cable from the handle to the latch is broken. Our mechanic said that it would cost $400 to replace the whole assembly, and $200 for labor. Has anyone had the same problem? How hard to fix yourself? Thanks.

Sounds a bit steep to me!

I can't imagine that it would cost $400 for the door handle cable.
You should be able to replace just the cable, at the most the cable
and the handle.

Try getting a 2nd opinion, possibly from a body-shop. They deal with repairing and replacing car/truck doors all the time and should be able to give you a good idea what is involved.

We were definitely NOT going to go for that price. We will check w/body shop, etc. Thanks!
