When I had my Pitbull, I had a chest harness and an attachment that let me attach it to the seat belt. It gave him enough movement but was short enough that, combined with the chest harness, would protect him in the event of an accident.

They also make a leash type thing that clips to the collar and goes into the seat belt buckle. Gives them just enough room to lay down sit and not get out of their place they are supposed to be.

My 65 lb mutt mutt stays in the back seat. Why?
I had a mastiff, 135 lbs, riding in the front seat in regular cab, He was quite timid, and driving slowly in town, I ran over a manhole cover that was loose and it "clanged", and frightened my "puppy", who dived under my feet to hide................,

Haha, my dog tries to squeeze herself between my steering wheel and my right leg to get down to my feet. Not so great when it presses my foot down on the accelerator.

Glad my dog isn't the only one that tries to sit on my lap while driving. It wouldn't bother me if he was 55 pounds. Lol

My pitbull runt (40lbs) loves to ride in the backseat area of my '01 S-crew Lariat. I fold down the passenger side rear and put her dog bed (which she loves) atop it.
At first she wanted to come and join us up front, but once I "claimed" that area of the truck as pack leader (we watch re-runs of the "Dog Whisperer" together ) she's content to lay calmly in the rear for hours and watch the world go by.

My golden has had a harness since he was about 12 weeks old. I use the Sleepypod Click it Harness. Only harness with a great rating from the Subaru tests. When we come back from a hunt or a hike, he usually is tired and will ride in the rear of my KR SCREW without it, being that now he is 9 months old and 78lbs. On the way there though, he wants to ride with his chest on the center console and watching out the window. I got the mud river seat protector for the rear and he loves it. Since he is all pumped up on the initial ride, he gets clipped in.
