Default Dodge Ram EcoDiesel?

Test drove one today and it is quite impressive with the engine made by Fiat. It's quiet and gets nearly 28 mpg. Has anyone compared it to the EcoBoost engine?

Cant really compare it fairly to the ecoboost... even though the ecoboost is a small displacement twin turbo charged engine, diesels will always trump it in MPG's. Theres pros and cons to both but in this sense its not really comparable just because a diesel will always get better fuel economy than a regular gas engine.

I was curious about that.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Ram2015.shtml

Since the 2 WD diesel is rated at 20/28 and 23 combined, and the 4 WD diesel is rated at 19/27 and 22 combined, I was wondering how many miles a year you would have to drive to make up for the additional cost of diesel fuel, and the $3,000 extra cost of the engine.

With an average cost of gas today at $2.90 and diesel at $3.66, that is about $.76 more per gallon for diesel.

http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/

Ball-parking it, the diesel would have to get at least 25% better mileage than a gas engine just to keep even on mpg, and that does not take into consideration the diesel engine initial extra cost and extra maintenance.

Hmmm.

Excellent "All Hat & No Cattle" thanks for responding. I'm pondering to trade in my 2012 FX4. It only has 21,000 miles and is loaded. Was set on a 2015 EcoBoost and then I drove the Laramie Longhorn EcoDiesel. I must admit, it made a life-long F-150 owner take notice. Loved getting 25 in town and the 8-speed tranny.

You have to consider when you trade the truck in a diesel will have a premium upon the trade, you get close to what you paid for the engine. So in many ways it is a wash on the extra cost.

Looking on the Ram 1500 diesel forum, many people are getting 50% or better mpg when towing compared to a gas engine. They also have a thread for the 30 mpg club, so some are doing pretty well.

About 30% of owners were having cel codes popping up quite often but a software up date has taken care of many of problems. An exhaust leak has popped up in the last few months and a fix is on the way for that and it looks like 2 or 3 rocker assy failures so normal first year jitters, but nothing really major to worry about.

Doesn't re-sale value depend on long-term reliability?

I have heard of some diesel truck engines that have a bad reputation.

Be that as it may, I wonder if you pay 3k extra for an engine you can get that 3k back when you sell it.

I too wondered about the Ram Diesel but here in MN I didn't want to take the chance during the Winter. Even modern Diesels can gel up without notice with subpar fuel and I would not always have access to plug in the block heater.

If you drive far daily you will like it! if you make short trips of a mile or 2 then shut off then stick with gas.
