Default Dilemma: 2WD vs. 4WD

I'm new to the Ford F150 Forum and new to trucks in general. I'm interested in purchasing a new/used F150 but am having a difficult time deciding between the need for 2WD vs. 4WD. I live in Indiana and don't typically have a need for 4WD based on weather conditions. This winter was bad but most winters are mild. I like the thought of 4WD but don't know that I'd need it where I'm at, and the difference in cost for 2WD is more enticing. I also don't see myself doing any towing. Any feedback one way or another would be very helpful!

Having 4 wheel drive will also give worse fuel economy, sounds to me like you already know the answer to your question.

If you don't need 4wd in Indiana, well, I reckon ye don't need it. I'd just get two WD with locking differential, of which I think there are a few different kinds. Ok boys, y'all chime in here...

Well, you pretty much covered it. Either you need it or you don't. I've always felt it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Resale value is higher on the 4wd. But it costs more. Like many things in life, it's a trade off.

Ahhh yes, the debate between 2 and 4WD. My last truck and the truck I just ordered is 2WD. I honestly don't need 4WD and when the weather is really bad, I opt not to drive in deep snow.

I plan to use the standard 17" wheels with snow tires and I'll get bigger rims and tires for use when it's not winter. Plus, I've always enjoyed great fuel economy with 2WD.

2WD has yet to leave me stranded.

I've rarely "needed" my 4wd either but something feels wrong to me about getting a 2wd truck. I know in western NY there wasn't much of a resale market for 2wd trucks

I can fully understand the need or want of 4 WD for some but 2 WD can serve very well for many.
