Diesel Year with NO electronics in Engine
Hey guys I am interested in getting a Ford that has a diesel engine with NO electronics in it. Something that is mechanically injected and diesel. I am looking for something that is the equivalent of the Cummins 12V 5.9L . What year should I go for. I am not a truck guy so I may have issues with this hah. Thanks for any and all help!

Your looking for a 7.3 IDI...they didn't even have turbos on them and I think they stopped making them in 92, 93 and 94 saw a turbo. They don't compare to the B5.9s...hell those even gave the 7.3PSDs a run for their money. Best off buying a 3/4 ton of your favorite year and then getting ahold of the guys at Fordcummins.com. They specialize in putting B5.9's (ISB and Common Rail as well) into Fords and have complete kits for it.

yea the thing that is steering me away from that is the money. They charge a arm and a leg for that. I talked to the guy and after I buy the truck and get it to him it would be almost 13,000. That is out of control.
Would a cummins 4BT also be electronic free except for maybe the starter?

Yes. A 4BT has since been renamed by Cummins as a B3.9. Same thing as the B5.9 minus two cylinders, even available as an ISB or Common Rail. You can even make 220 hp with the right modifications. Unfortunately, everything is the same so you still need the same motor mounts, transmission adapter, and everything else just to hook it up. The only main difference is you might save $1000 on an engine.

Get a 7.3L. I just traded in my 97 with 200K miles. Best motor Ford ever had in a diesel truck.......and it was made by International for them. The last year they put them in Ford trucks was 2003 1/2. The only electric is in the Glow plug system, starter, cam position sensor, alternator.

It was the best diesel Ford ever had and made by International but was extremely underpowered from the factory. If I remember correctly the IDI wasn't designed for the F-series while the PSD was.
I've had iffy experiences with PSDs. Some family friends have a 99 Excursion and a 99 F350, both with about 275K miles on them which they bought new. Each one has gone through 3 transmissions (they don't pull with them) and the Excursion has fried 2 ECMs which caused the glow plugs not to ignite, stranding them in New Mexico last winter. Not to mention they only get about 13 mpg with them.
Why exactly are you looking for a mechanically controlled truck?
