Default cam phaser sensor

If the cam phaser is making noise, would a person change the sensor first. Or just replace the cam phaser itself.

Change the cam Phasers. The sensor will not cause it to make noise.

Do they make a whistling sound when they are going bad? My truck was making a whistling noise yesterday when is was 5 degrees out. When i would let off the gas, It would stop and then gradually start up again.

How much? Can a guy do it himself without tearing the engine apart?
