Either way, the point it, it appears to have been losing air quickly, and when the OP pulled to the left to get off the road, the low tire "buckled" under the edge of the wheel and was being ridden on, and then the wheel/rim edge "cut" through the sidewall and destroyed the tire (aka: causing the "blowout").

I say this because how the tire looks in the pic. You can see where the sidewall was ridden on prior to the separation between the sidewall and where the tread rolls over to the sidewall.

Now, I'm not saying this makes anything the fault of the OP ... just saying it might be bad luck. It just doesn't LOOK to me that the tire just failed out of nowhere unless the reason it started losing air in the first place was a fault of the tire itself - which it may have been. The tire may very well have been a "dud" to begin with.
This exactly^ when the tire starts losing air pressure the sidewall heats up to the point of failure, I've seen it many times over the years and it was always a puncture/road hazard that was the cause.

It is really a shame that the tire pressure monitoring system won't update and warn sooner than it does, the same thing happened to my wife's 14 Escape twice on separate occasions, by the time she was able to pull over safely the tire was ruined.

With that said the op was wise to purchase road hazard to cover the tire, the other damage is why we buy comprehensive insurance.

Looks to me like there is no valve stem in the wheel.

Just curious what is the air pressure in your other three tires? I bet discount will take care of all of it.

Geez... I thought when I opened this I was going to find someone that was selling these tires cheap.... blowing them out.....

Pretty disappointed.

Hope all is well OP and you have been taken care of. As with everything in life nothing is perfect. That includes tires. Buying an owning a Ford is more than enough proof of that!

Discount said they will cover the tire, but not any of the other damage. They said I would have to file a claim with BFG. Discount inspected the tire and said they saw no evidence of punctures on the tread and said they couldn't tell about the sidewall. They offered to fill out the claim and submit it for me. I also emailed BFG about what happened. They contacted me and I told them that Discount was filing the claim for me. They contacted the store and discount told the guy on the phone that it was caused by impact,WTF? I doubt anything will be covered now. I'll update when I have additional news.

I had a brand new Michelin LTX M/S that had split because of what Discount said was impact. Don't remember hitting anything. Luckily I saw the bubble and split before I drove for an extended period. If was to drive at highway speed it could have split like yours. I replaced my LTX with KO2 thinking it may protect from impact damage. So much for that. Glad you are OK though.

That sucks. So much back and forth between every one too, hopefully it works out for you.
