If you have a bad ignition coil, but don't know which is bad, how can you find out? This is assuming, of course, that the engine light is not coming on.

Any help can help.

Come on guys, there has to be some sort of test that can be performed. Ohm meter, heat gun on the exhaust, something? Surely someone in this forum has a trick that they use. This is really a good question that we all can learn from.

thanks for the update, but the light has not come on yet. I appreciate all responses / ideas, so keep them coming. I really don't want to shell out $500 for 8 new coils!

While the engine is running unplug the injectors one at a time.. Not the coils, as the cylinder with gas foul the plug... If the engine RPM drops when you unplug an injector, plug it back in and go to the next cylinder. IF the RPM stays constant then you know which cylinder is not firing. I really reccomend replacing all the coils as they are all the same age and they will start to fail close together.

Does that work for a 2001 ford f-150? Is there somewhere online that I can see how it is done?
