Its not super Common where i am but it DOES happen, Mainly because so many people back into things because they suck at driving.....
As for taking the gate off? insanely fast and easy. one guy, no more then 30 seconds tops.

I freaked out yesterday when I realized mine wasn't locked (ALWAYS have kept it locked)....but went to the landfill coupe of days earlier, so had to let the gate down....
was just in a metro area yesterday.....
for some reason I checked it last night as I was checking if I'd locked my doors, surely enough, tailgate not locked.
A sigh of relief after I locked back.....Was lucky

I bought one of these for that extra little piece of mind.
Installed on my gate. No it does not rattle or make any noise of any kind, it comes with velcro tape that keeps it from moving around and makes it impossible to remove the gate even if they defeat the factory lock. By the time they get done breaking the factory lock and then see that thing, they will likely say screw it and go find someone else's gate that has no extra protection.
Yeah I have full coverage insurance but I'd rather spend $14 bux on that little deterrent than have to pony up a $500 deductible.

I also put a hose clamp on mine, got the idea from another thread on here. Hopefully it will deter any potential thief expecting to do a quick ****** and run.
