Default Audio Question

I have the "stepped up" (for 2002, anyway) audio system in my old XLT. It's the AM/FM cassette player, with factory 6 disc changer. There is nothing aftermarket installed.

I like to listen to my music loud, but have noticed that once I get the volume up halfway, it will play fine, but then cut out without warning on the right side only. This drop out lasts all of about 15 seconds, then will come back in suddenly. It never happens with the volume below half, and sounds just fine, pretty much all the time, except when the right side drops out. No distortion at all.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening at that half-volume threshold?
