I wouldn't do it just for MPG. I had a 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x4 single cab step side. Got 17-18 MPG 100% stock.

The 3.0 has 4 cylinder performance and drinks fuel like a v8, but it is super reliable being a pushrod motor. For mpg i would get a 2.3 duratrac found in 2001 and up rangers. Stick will give good mileage but auto aint bad either.

Other than MPG I had no issues with mine. In fact, I wish I would have kept it but that can be said about many of my vehicles.
