Question Advice on new vs used?

Hey guys,

I've been a long time reader but just signed up. My current car is still kicking but becomes a money pit every few months or so. Just for some background: I'm a young guy, my first vehicle was used $8k so I've never bought a new truck.

I've been looking at getting an F150 for sometime now I was mostly looking at a used 2011-13 5.0 L Scab 4x4, trailer tow, with 6.5' box XLT (with convenience package) or XTR. Best I can find is a rig under 40k between $24k-27. With taxes the truck would be about 30 grand.

Went into a dealer, built & priced out a 2014 Scab 6.5' 5.0 L 3.55 ratio, with 301A, tow & XLT convenience package with running boards thrown in. I have the X-plan through work so before taxes $32,358 taxes in: $36,565. Seeing as I was initially looking at well enough under $30 grand used was a bit of a sticker shock.

Funny how gas has just jumped and I'm still looking at buying a truck lol.

Wondering if I could get some thoughts on how much the 0 km and full warranty makes the extra 7-10 grand worth buying new over?

You should also take into account that you will get a better interest rate on a new truck. Could make the payments comparable even with the price difference

I bought my 2010 Platinum in 2012 with 45,000 miles on it for $25,000 (of course I traded in my car for a 10,000 credit) I have not had any (major) problems with it....knock on wood...So I think buying used is a great way to go. As long as you get a thorough inspection done by a mechanic you trust, and it comes out clean, save the 7 grand and get a used truck.

If you aren't in a huge hurry, take your time with finding the right truck. I spent 3 months and test drove a dozen trucks before I found "the one."

I'm a big fan of used cars that have at least 1 year and 12K miles warranty left. I save some money, get any glaring issues resolved under warranty, and can decide whether an extended warranty is worth it or not.

F150s hold their value well, so the difference is smaller. But if the difference is $7K, that's a lot. Do your homework and check cars.com for comparison pricing. You can also find really good deals and incentives on new trucks making the difference less.

But, at the end of the day, it's you and your budget and the payment you want to get yourself into. Know that and stick to that. The "it's only $50 more a month" game is dangerous. Consider interest rate, insurance, and gas costs into that equation.

Or, throw caution to the wind and splurge on a new truck. Good luck!

I was undecided on buying new or used a couple months ago, ended up getting a certified preowned 2011 ecoboost screw fully loaded FX4 with 10,000 miles. The certified preowned gave me a longer warranty than buying new and lower finance rate (1.9%). I love the truck, very happy to have saved $10,000+!

CPO is a great choice. They tack on 1 year and 12K miles of warranty to your original, and you'll have at least that, plus you can buy an ESP for 9 years and 125K miles instead of 7.

If you can find a good deal on a low miles CPO, it almost as good as new.

My credit union rates are the same for 2011 and newer.

Right now the interest rates are comparable. New is 4.49% over 48 months. If the price difference wasn't as sizeable after taxes I would've pulled the trigger. Seeing as how the price before taxes between new and used is only about $3000 is not as much of a hit when considering full warranty. It's the tax man that's killing me.

Yes, I have considered insurance, gas costs and the like into the equation as well. I don't make impulse decisions in these matters so it helps to have some 3rd party suggestions

Thanks for the help fellas! I find the amount of Scab's out there that are configured the way I'd like are minimal when compared to Screws. I'll keep looking or maybe I'll luck out with huge employee pricing and massive rebates (a guy can dream right lol).

I started looking for a used truck with around 20k miles about a month ago. Saturday I bought a new 2013 xlt screw cheaper then I could get a used. I had to go 200 miles to get it but I am happy! Search for new 2013 before you buy used....might get lucky.

This right here. For me, new and 2 year old used were nearly the same. Easy decision.
