Default Back firing f150

I have a 1987 f150 5.0 C6.The truck quit running.I replaced the inline pump with a filter. The truck will run but when returning to idle it won't increase the RPM without back firing and stumbleing. It will run after paddling the the acc. pedal. The truck has 100000 miles on it.
There looks like a filter, closer to the fuel tank.Is this a filter?
Thanks

Reminds me when my 1990 SHO steered a crank pin and messed the timing up. It would start and run with the idle being erratic and would back fire once revved up. The thing is the ECU would relearn the fuel/timing mapping and actually make adjustments to operate.
