4R75E Fairbanks/ Superior Power Tow shift kit
So its time replace the torque converter in my 04+ FX4 5.4L. I can't see pulling a trans with 175000 miles on it and not rebuilding it. So I will be rebuilding it as well. I'm looking for feedback on the Fairbanks/Superior Power Tow shift kit. Has anyone used it on the 4R75E in the 04-08 F150? How did you like it? I don't want the shifts to be ridiculously harsh, but want to firm it up a little. It says it has three levels of calibration and is friendly. Thanks in advance for the info...

I'm not sure a torque converter can be "rebuilt" with out some real machining, but if I were you I'd look up user mitymerc. You can usually find him on the Engine / Drivetrain sub forum.

I'm not familiar with that kit but you can adjust shift firmness with any good tuner. With my SCT X4 I can adjust all those settings without needing to order a tune.

Actually have the x4 and use 5star tunes. I like the adjustability and am pleased with the tuner, but have read boosting pressure that way may stress parts of the valve body and pump. I'm no expert so really have no info to back that up. Just exploring my options... I wouldn't really think twice about it if I were not going to rebuild the valve body anyway. The kit seems to have most rebuild parts and claims to address some of the factory flaws such as cracked separator plates and slow reverse engagement. Also considering a valve body from BCA. he claims to address the same issues but with modifications similar to the Jmod. Have also read that the jmod isn't as noticeable on the 4R75E due to similar factory improvements....

Hmm. I heard the opposite, that since the shift firmness goes into gear faster, there's less friction and heat to scrape the parts inside the transmission down. Looks like I have more learning to do.

No, you are correct. The reason for quicker shifts other than feel is less friction to the clutch packs and other friction surfaces. I had read that increasing shift firmness via the tuner is done by increasing pressure via the pump. This increases pressure everywhere and not just in the proper shift circuits in the valve body. Some feel this wears things faster in the valve body. potentially causing shift issues in the future. Again I can't say this for sure, but it makes sense if you think about it.
