It will need a USB port replacement in addition to a firmware update. It will cost us for parts and possibly labor. Or you can get an android and simply upgrade the firmware for free. LINK
Here is the link where it states it will not be free.

I stand corrected. Where did get your info on a USB replacement?

I know how USB port work and I don't understand why you should replace it, USB port is just a bridge between ur phone and the truck.... But anyway thats a more frindly way to use ur phone with the truck for apple user, I had the chance to try it in a chevy and I totaly love it😍

"Owners of 2016 model year Ford vehicles with SYNC 3 are required to perform a software upgrade and purchase a hardware upgrade to use Apple CarPlay. Please check back on the Ford Owner site this summer for more information about these upgrades."
However, early articles regarding Ford's office announcement regarding carplay contained a statement by Alan Hall, Ford's technology, research, and innovation communications manager that said the following:"because CarPlay requires a more advanced USB module, iPhone owners will have to take their cars to a dealer for a hardware upgrade."
So there you have it. Probably needs something like USB3 and we just got USB2. Or the USB module is a hub that now needs more power to run it. But I agree, it is a little vague and hard to understand given the relatively simple USB implementation.I had Apple Carplay in my aftermarket Pioneer on my old F250. Pretty sweet. Current sync functionality does have a fair bit of carplay like features, however.
