Default Why did you buy a F150??

I am new here. I currently drive a 2004 4Runner and it's been a great SUV and has really turned me onto the Toyota brand. Currently has 192,000 miles and still runs great. However, I am looking to get into the truck market and really like the newer (2015 - current) F150s. I have also looked at the Tundra and that seems to be the closest competition for me.

It's hard to gauge a truck by a 30 min test drive and reading so hoping to get some input here. Why did y'all go with the F150? What issues have come up with the truck? What don't you like about it?

In addition, has anyone driven F150 and tundras who may have both perspectives?

Thank so much!!

Bought an F150 to tow my camper.... I also drove a Tundra but the Tundra gas milage is terrible, especially while towing. Payload numbers on an F150 are generally higher than on Tundras. My buddy drives a Tundra, we call it the "big gulp!" My 5.0L V8 gets 22mpg on the highway, 12+ mpg towing. Tundra gas milage while towing is dismal and gas tanks are smaller. I also like the technology implemented in the F150 over and above the Tundra.

Good luck on your search

I still have a 2007 Tacoma with just under 200,000 miles and going strong. With Toyota's reputation and my personal experience I looked HARD for a Tundra. This was 2 1/2 years ago in May 2016. While the Tacoma is a great truck I'd reached the point where I simply needed something bigger. I considered trading the Tacoma for a new 2016 F-150 or 2016 Tundra. But decided the Tacoma was worth more to me to keep it and look at used 1/2 tons. I ended up with a 2014 F150 for about the same out of pocket expense as buying a new truck and trading. I made the right decision. My wife now drives the Tacoma around town and it is perfect for her. We also have a 2009 Honda that I drive a lot in town and for short trips. I drive the F-150 on long road trips, towing and when we need the room.

I think the Tundra is heavier duty truck. It comes with a 5.7L V8 and 4.30 gears. It really compares more closely in performance to an F250 with a gas engine. If comparing apples to apples the Tundra gets about 2 mpg less fuel mileage than Ford. Considering the bigger engine, lower gearing, and near 3/4ton capability that isn't bad. I did the math and figured it would burn about 7 gallons more fuel to drive 1000 miles. That is about $15 more at todays prices for a 1000 mile round trip.

Had I decided to buy new I'd have probably gone with a Tundra. But several things led me to Ford. Toyota didn't offer a big fuel tank until 2014 and I couldn't find one with the bigger tank. The F-150's 36 gallon tank is a huge plus. The Tundra hasn't had a major overhaul since 2008. It is a dated design and Toyota will probably redesign it soon. I was looking for a 4X4 crew cab. When I used various internet searches for vehicles within 100 miles I'd find dozens of Fords that met my criteria. Only a handful of Tundra's and the used Tundra's held their resale value better. The few Tundra's I found that were close were higher trim level models that would have cost more. Had I gone new, I could have paid less for a comparable Tundra.

But after 2 1/2 years I don't have a single complaint with the Ford. It is very comfortable, more so than Tundra. I'm over 63,000 trouble free miles. I drove it from GA to CO earlier in Nov to elk hunt. I drove over 3700 miles round trip and it was perfect. I averaged just under 20 mpg going out, only 18 for some reason coming back. While in CO it was under 15, but it spent a lot of time grinding up snow and mud covered dirt roads in 4X4. It pulled me out of 2 near stuck situations.

I bought my truck because we needed to put three car seats across the back, and there was no way I was going the minivan route. We have toys to tow (boat, jet skis, camper, Jeep, etc...), and most SUVs wouldn't handle the heavier ones as well. It always seems like I need to haul lumber, or much, or something back from Lowe's, so the choice was pretty easy for me. I'm not a farmer or a contractor, so call me a poser if you want... but this works for us. I bought a Ford because I get "A Plan". So far, my '16 XLT Sport SuperCrew has 50,000 trouble-free miles, and I still enjoy getting in it every day.

Because I know how to work on them. With that said, it's a well known fact Ford quality is unmatched so I won't have to work on it much.

Have always owned fords. Had a 99 f350 with a 7.3 , with a speed that I actually loved . Got sick from a tick bite and by the end of some days my legs would be so weak I couldn't hardly push clutch in. I have a 12 raptor that u bought ti put up for resale . Loved the new style and luxury of them so I sold f350 and got a 150 for daily driver.
